After the first open-heart surgery in Taiwan was performed successfully in 1960, the first kidney transplantation followed in 1977. In 1983, the computer-monitored resectoscope for transurethral prostatectomy was invented and internationally patented. This remarkable breakthrough has greatly improved the technique of TURP, and is indeed of the first magnitude.

In 1985, for the first time in Taiwan, the department applied the extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripter. The first legal heart transplantation was performed by the department in 1987. The department is also noted for the first sex reassignment surgery in Taiwan, performed in 1988. The department has artistically developed the clitoroplasty and skin culture. Additionally, in 1989 the department successfully fulfilled an atrial switch procedure for an infant case of transposition of the great arteries with atrial septal defect. In 1991, the department carried out a successful single lung transplantation, which was the first in Asia..

In the treatment of colon and rectal cancer, the no touch technique has been traditionally used. Total mesorectal excisions, various techniques of sphincter-saving procedures and preoperative CCRT have been widely applied. Moreover, in 1989 we performed the first laparoscopic colonic resection in Taiwan, which is used in the treatment of benign colorectal diseases and colorectal cancers.
