Instructions to Authors

  1. The Chinese Medical Journal (Taipei) is pleased to publish scientific papers in all fields of medicine. The articles should not have been, nor will they be published elsewhere.
  2. The original manuscripts with 4 copies should be submitted to the Editorial office, Chinese Medical Journal (Taipei), Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, 201, Sec. 2, Shih-Pai Road, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. The manuscript components should be arranged in this sequence: title page, abstract, text acknowledgements, references, tables, legends for illustrations, and a Chinese translation of the abstract.
  3. The title page should contain the title, name(s) of the author(s), affiliation(s) and a running title. All footnotes to name(s) of the author(s) and affiliation(s) should be indicated by Arabic numeral superscripts. The name for correspondence and his/her address and phone number should also be on this page.
  4. The second page should carry an abstract. The abstract in Chinese should be not more than 600 characters and, in English, not more than 400 words. The abstract should be structured with the following headings: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. In the Background section, describe the rationale for the study; in Methods, briefly describe the methods; in Results, present the significant results; in Conclusions, state concisely the interpretation of the data. Include 3 to 7 keywords in alphabetical order for coding and indexing. Use Index Medicus terms from medical subject headings where possible.
  5. We solicit the following categories of articles: review articles, original articles, case reports and brief communications. Review articles are papers which report any authoritative reviews or descriptions of new ideas in medicine. There is no fixed format for review articles. Original articles should contain Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion in that sequence. Case reports shduld contain an introduction, case report, and discussion in sequence. Brief communications should be short and concise (not more than six pages) and may be prepared and written according to the format for original articles but need not follow it strictly.
  6. English manuscript should be typed, double-spaced on A4 white bond paper.
  7. Numerals should be Arabic, but should be spelled out in the beginning of a sentence.
  8. All measures should be presented in metric units. Symbols and abbreviations in common use are preferred.
  9. Acknowledgements should be made of substantive personnel or facilitative constributors only; otherwise they should be omitted.
  10. References should be cited by number, in parentheses, within the text (only one reference to a number), e.g.[3,5,11-15]. Do not give names of authors within the text.
    To arrange the references, the writer should consult the Index Medicus. If the references are from journals, they should be presented in this sequence: name(s) of author(s), title of article, name of journal, year, volume number, beginning page and ending page. If from books, they should be in this sequence: name(s) of author(s), title of article, name(s) of editor(s), title of book, edition, place, publisher, year, opening page and ending page.

  11. Type each table on a separate sheet. Vertical lines should be omitted and horizontal lines should also be limited.
  12. For footnotes in tables and the title page, use the following symbols in this sequence:
    a, b, c, d, e, .....
    Footnotes in the text must be limited.
  13. For illustrations, photos should be on smooth photographic paper; photomicrographs should give the stain and magnification. Figures should be drawn with black ink, on illustration paper. Usually, illustrations should be black and white, and their total amount should not be more than two pages. Type legends for illustrations on a separate paper.
  14. If the manuscripts do not meet the requirements of the Journal, the editors are authorized to make changes.
  15. The article, once published, is copyrighted by the Journal. No part of the article may be reproduced by any means without written permission.
  16. The Journal will assume all costs for articles of six pages or less. If the article is seven pages or more, the authors must assume financial responsibility for the cost of the extra pages.
  17. The author(s) is given 50 copies of reprints of the article without charge. If more reprints are needed, they may be ordered during the first proofreading.
  18. For more details, the authors are advised to consult the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" by the International Steering Committee which appeared in Ann Intern Med 1988; 108: 258-65.
