Dermatology Department

Dermatology Department

Number of beds: 16

The department contains 2 divisions:

Dermatologic Diagnosis, Photochemotherapy

Dermatopathological Teaching

The Department used to be a subdivision of the Department of internal medicine at the establishment of Taipei Veterans General Hospital in 1959. It had been restructured to be an independent division in 1975 and has been advanced to Dermatology department since 1989.

The missions possessed at the establishment of our department are to promote adequate and high-quality patient care in clinical dermatology and to train professional dermatologists who are also willing to dedicate to education and research. Our department consists of 12 physicians, including renowned attendings, chief residents and junior residents, cooperating together to provide the best patient care and research. We offer most of our services on an outpatient basis, with more than 300 visits a day.

In addition to the general dermatology outpatient services, the Department allocates specialized laser treatment sessions especially for amyloidosis patients. An inpatient service of 16 beds is also available for the intensive treatment of severe dermatoses. We have many gadgets and devices to help patient with their skin problems, including liquid nitrogen for the treatment of warts and skin tumors, ultraviolet chamber for the phototherapy of psoriasis, and low energy level laser for vitiligo. We started to expand our cosmetic and laser dermatology services in 2002 and have different kinds of laser equipments to provide advanced cosmetic treatment, such as dye laser for telangiectasia and spider angioma, Nd-YAG laser for the removal of tattoo and some pigmented dermatosis, and Erbium-YAG laser for syringoma, amyloidosis and certain skin tumors. These treatments improve not only the appearances, but also the psychosocial well-being of the patients.

Recently, we built up the “Holistic Health Service System” in 2012, aiming to provide brand-new medical services by combining cosmetic medicine and health physical examination. We provide, in essence, all sorts of skin examinations and mini-invasive cosmetic procedures for patients looking for friendly medical environment and help patient “become beauty from inside out”!

Our faculty also has an active research arm, with prolific annual publication in some well-known journals both in Taiwan and abroad. The leading studies we have done in genetic and molecular biology of amyloidosis and psoriasis have furthered the understanding of their pathogenesis, and new approaches to the disease treatment. Studies of autoimmune bullous disease and follicular stem cell in vitro and in vivo are the projects we find exciting and would like to devote more studies in the future.
