Department of Urology

Features of the Department

Our clinical care and research performance have significantly improved under the leadership of the previous chief officers. In addition to actively participating in  domestic and international academic conferences, the department also sends attending physicians abroad for further training in various specialties.

The Department of Urology has achieved many domestic milestones in clinical care:

We imported the first Electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) and were the first to use EHL to successfully treat bladder stones. We established the first domestic urodynamic exam room.

We introduced the first lithotriptor (Dornier HM3) to Taiwan in 1985. We conducted the first domestic Raz bladder neck suspension surgical treatment to treat female stress urinary incontinence. We performed the first domestic Kock pouch urinary drainage surgery in 1984 as well as the first domestic completely detubularized sigmoid colon neobladder surgery in 1987 and significantly improved the quality of life in patients undergoing radical cystectomy.

We conducted the first domestic percutaneous prolene mesh sling surgery for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. In the early 1980s, we led the development of urological laparoscopic surgery and performed the first domestic laparoscopic varicocele ligation, laparoscopic adrenalectomy and laparoscopic kidney removal surgery.

In 2009, we introduced the newest da Vinci Si robotic arm to Taiwan, the first in Asia.

With our efforts, we have earned the respect from patients and also gained the trust of the public. In addition to the former Presidents, Chiang Kai-Shek and Chiang Ching-Kuo, who both received radical prostatectomy at our department, many government officials also had different surgeries here, including several Premiers and Ministers. Our superb surgical technology is renowned throughout the country.

Since the inception of this department, the clinical research performance and medical services we provide have improved dramatically over the years. Most importantly, we have also trained a number of outstanding Taiwanese urologists such as Dr. Jong-Khing Huang, the former Superintendent of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital; Dr. Ming-Tsun Chen, Superintendent of Shu-Tien Urology Ophthalmology Clinic, The Yin Shu-Tien Medical Foundation; Dr. John Yin, Director of the Shalu Tungs' Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital; Dr. Liang-Ming Lee, Vice Superintendent of Taipei Municipal Wan Fang Hospital; Dr. Allen W. Future Prospects

From where we stand, we will maintain the high-quality clinical service to care for our patients, provide training programs to surgeons and train more outstanding urologists and continue to conduct in-depth clinical and basic research to study urological diseases. We hope to provide the world-class urology care and become a world leader in urology.
