Psychiatry Department

Psychiatry Department

Patients' activity roomThe Psychiatry Department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital is one of the best programs in Taiwan carrying out three major missions: clinical services, teaching and research. Four divisions (General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation) were established to provide inpatient and outpatient services, day care rehabilitation, emergency consultations and forensic psychiatric assessments. The faculties of this department are also responsible for teaching medical students at National Yang-Ming University and for training interns and psychiatric residents. The educational goals are not only to provide updated knowledge of modern psychiatry but also to facilitate the understanding of human behavior. The research covers two main areas: psychosocial studies on individual and group psychotherapy and marital and family relationships, and biological research on psychopharmacology, molecular genetics and sleep disorders. In collaboration with the Unit of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and the Department of Nuclear Medicine, a brain imaging research group is being established to study patients with affective disorders and schizophrenia using fMRI and positron emission tomography (PET) techniques. From molecular to clinical studies, this department will carry the mission of brain research to the millennium.
