Family Medicine Department

Family Medicine Department clinical teachingFounded in January 1985, the Family Medicine Department cultivates the best-qualified primary care physicians to carry out the government's health care programs for district medical networks, community medical care services and activities of the Group Practice Centers (GPC). In June 1998, the Family Medicine Department was expanded to include the Division of Community Medicine and the Division of Hospice Palliative Care.

The major medical services of the Family Medicine Department include outpatient clinics and inpatient services, health examinations and Preventive Medicine affairs, support for medical services in the GPCs, Community Medical services and home care services. The department focuses its training and research on family medicine, community medicine, geriatric medicine, and hospice palliative care. The residency-training program includes internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, palliative medicine, radiology and community medicine branches, with emphases on the physician-patient relationship and behavioral sciences.

The Hospice Palliative Care Department provides holistic and palliative care for terminal patients. Based on the Principle of Total care for the whole person and family throughout the entire course using a team approach, hospice palliative care provides comprehensive care to the patients; not only caring for physical problems, but also mental and spiritual needs. The department also provides training programs for other health care professionals. A large emphasis is placed on improving the quality of life in the terminal stage, and assisting with the bereavement of families to achieve the ultimate goal of a "Good Death".
